- 用脑科学建立更具生物合理性的 AI;
- 用 AI/计算模型提出关于脑计算的假设;
- 用神经数据训练、约束或检验 AI 模型;
NeuroAI = Natural Intelligence ↔ Artificial Intelligence
fMRI → Transformer → classification accuracy
neural data → infer computational principle → build AI model → model makes novel prediction → biological experiment tests prediction
2.2 2010s:deep learning
2.3 2020s:从“brain-inspired AI”升级为“science of intelligence”
Embodied Turing Test
- dendritic computation
- synaptic plasticity
- neuromodulation
- recurrent computation
- sparse coding
- predictive processing
- continual learning
- energy efficiency
- embodied intelligence
- developmental learning
image → CNN/ViT → intermediate representation
image → retina → V1 → V2 → IT
Stanford NeuroAI Lab
3.3 AI for Neuroscience:AI
- neural decoding
- spike sorting
- cell segmentation
- connectomics
- behavioral tracking
- neural population analysis
- multimodal data integration
- automated experiment analysis
- scientific agents
- neural activity foundation models
- brain foundation models
- EEG foundation models
- fMRI foundation models
- multimodal brain models
Foundation model of neural activity predicts response to new stimulus types。
“把 Transformer 用在 EEG/fMRI 上”并不等于出现了 GPT of the brain。
Neural data
- 数据规模远小于互联网;
- subject variability 极大;
- recording modality 不统一;
- signal-to-noise ratio 低;
- experimental paradigms 高度异质;
3.5 NeuroAI × Embodied AI:
embodied intelligence。
brain + body + environment + learning
brain + benchmark dataset。
- 训练一个视觉模型;
- 比较不同 layer 与不同脑区的表征;
- 找出 architecture、objective 与 neural representation 的对应关系;
- 进一步改变模型;
Cellpose、connectomics automation、behavioral tracking、large-scale neural analysis
experiment design + data engineering + computational modeling + AI-assisted discovery
experiment → SPSS → figure → paper。
AI neuroscience
- representational analysis
- causal intervention
- lesioning
- probing
- mechanistic interpretability
- behavioral experiments
5.1 Dan Yamins — Stanford
- visual cortex
- deep neural networks
- object recognition
- representation
- neural network models of sensory cortex
5.2 Andreas Tolias — Stanford
Tolias Lab
vision + neural data + large-scale models
5.3 Kanaka Rajan — Harvard
Kanaka Rajan
computational neuroscience → AI → reverse engineering brain
- neural dynamics
- learning
- memory
- decision making
- biologically constrained artificial systems
5.4 SueYeon Chung — Harvard
mathematical neuroscience + physics + representation learning
- statistical physics
- manifold theory
- neuroscience
- machine learning
5.5 Haim Sompolinsky — Harvard
- neural network dynamics
- statistical physics
- computation
- learning
- high-dimensional systems
cognition → computation → AI
例如:
- Bayesian inference
- causal learning
- concept learning
- compositionality
- reasoning
- decision making
5.7 Demis Hassabis / DeepMind:
6. Harvard、Stanford
Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences 建立 NeuroAI 合作。 13
Stanford
- Stanford NeuroAI Lab
- Stanford AI Lab
- Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute
- HAI
- Neuroengineering
- large-scale neuroimaging / neurophysiology
NeuroAI professor?”
“This work contributes to NeuroAI.”
Artificial neural network:
matrix multiplication + nonlinear activation + optimization
Biological neural network:
neurons + dendrites + synapses + neurotransmitters + neuromodulation + recurrent dynamics + development + body + environment
- preprocessing 可以自动化;
- segmentation 可以自动化;
- decoding 可以自动化;
- behavioral tracking 可以自动化;
- literature search 可以 agent 化;
- coding 可以让 LLM 生成;
“Can we classify X using a Transformer?”
而是:
“What computational principle would make X possible?”
AI researcher
model → prediction → experiment → revision
neuroscience / neuroengineering PhD
- visual neuroscience background
- fMRI
- computational analysis
AI / ML
/ \
/ \
/ \
/ \
Neuroscience ---- Computation
LLM / NLP / generic deep learning
Visual Neuroscience
↓
Computational Neuroscience
↓
Neural Representation
↓
Deep Neural Network Models
↓
Large-scale Neural Data
↓
NeuroAI / Brain Foundation Models
preprocessing → GLM → ROI → activation map
- highly standardized;
- highly documented;
- highly automatable;
- relatively low theoretical barrier。
neural representation
computational modeling
generative modeling
multimodal learning
brain foundation models
causal modeling
2024:
“Foundation Models!”
2025:
“Multimodal LLM!”
2026:
“Agentic AI!”
2027:
“World Models!”
Layer 1:
- probability
- statistics
- linear algebra
- optimization
- machine learning
- deep learning
- computational neuroscience
- neuroscience
objective function → inductive bias → optimization → generalization → representation → evaluation
visual neuroscience
- retina
- V1
- ventral stream
- dorsal stream
- receptive fields
- population coding
- predictive coding
- visual attention
- mental imagery
- cortical hierarchy
Layer 3:
- foundation models
- self-supervised learning
- generative models
- multimodal models
- mechanistic interpretability
- neural decoding
- causal representation learning
- embodied AI
15.1 Neural foundation models
cross-subject + cross-session + multimodal
“pretrained model of neural activity”
data。
15.2 Mechanistic NeuroAI
不是:
model predicts neural data
而是:
model contains a computational mechanism that explains neural data.
例如:
Neural data
↓
Hypothesis
↓
Computational model
↓
Emergent behavior
↓
Neural prediction
↓
Experiment
15.3 Embodied / Developmental Intelligence
download 10 trillion tokens → gradient descent
development + embodiment + neuroscience + AI
- AI for neuroscience;
- deep learning for neuroimaging;
- neural decoding;
- brain-inspired AI;
- computational neuroscience;
- BCI;
- cognitive modeling;
┌───────────────┐
│ Neuroscience │
└───────┬───────┘
│
hypotheses
↓
┌───────────────┐
│ AI │
└───────┬───────┘
│
predictions
↓
┌───────────────┐
│ Experiment │
└───────┬───────┘
│
new data
↓
┌───────────────┐
│ Neuroscience │
└───────────────┘
AI API researcher
“AI + neuroscience”
How does the brain learn?
How does the brain represent latent variables?
Why are biological representations so data efficient?
How does recurrent computation support perception?
How does intelligence emerge through development?
Human
↓
Question
↓
Hypothesis
↓
AI agent
↓
Analysis / Simulation / Literature
↓
Experiment
↓
Human interpretation
question selection + hypothesis formation + experimental design + interpretation
- NeuroAI 很可能成为未来 neuroscience / AI 最重要的交叉领域之一;
Neuroscientist who knows AI
AI researcher who happens to have fMRI data
而是:
A computational scientist who understands biological intelligence deeply enough to formulate AI problems differently.
